At the outset of Chapman's tennis dynasty of the 1980s, there was Kumar who helped the Panthers to a CCAA men's title and its first NCAA tournament appearance ever in 1983 under first-year head coach Mike Edles. Chapman placed seventh at the national championships that year, thanks in part to the leadership from senior Kumar.

Kumar was a two-time Chapman MVP, posting an 11-6 record as the team's No. 1 player during his junior year in 1982. As a freshman he was CCAA No. 2 singles champion in 1980.
