Eckert was inducted posthumously just three years after his death at the young age of 32. An all-around outstanding student-athlete, he was a four-year letter winner in basketball and track and graduated magna cum laude with a 3.8 grade-point average. He was awarded the Don Perkins memorial Awards as Chapman's top student-athlete in 1969.

Eckert earned All-America honors as a sprinter in three track events at the NCAA National Championships: 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash and 440-yard dash. He earned third place in the 100 yards. On the basketball court, he finished his career with 1,441 points which ranks sixth in Chapman history.
