A member of Chapman's famed 440-yard relay team that placed sixth at the 1969 NCAA national championships in Ashland, Ohio, Hurzeler joined fellow Panther Hall members Jim Frost, Bing Howell and Doug Eckert in the feat. During his three-year career with the Chapman track and field team, was a member of three additional school record-breaking relays: 400 yards and meters and the sprint medley as well as setting Chapman individual records in the 100 yards (tying Bob Maimbourg's original record of 9.8 seconds) and the 60-yard high hurdle indoor record at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in 1969.
