Larson's best year for the Panthers' basketball team was in 1961-62 when he shared the Welch Trophy (team most valuable player) with Jeff Cotwright. That season he earned All-Pacific Coast and All-America honors and led Chapman in scoring, averaging 18 points per game. He again earned All-America honors as a senior in 1962-63 when the captain led Chapman with 15.7 points per game and the Panthers reached the NCAA Regional championship game.

In his three seasons as a letter winner, Chapman won no less than 17 games in a season. And in his final two years the Panthers went a combined 39-13 (.750 win pct.). Larson still ranks in Chapman's all-time top-10 in scoring and rebounding, finishing his career with 1,300 points and 797 rebounds.
