Stevens was a winner, and played some of his best basketball when the games mattered most. Twice he was named to the All-West Regional team when the Panthers won the tournament and advanced to the NCAA national tournament. As team captain, he helped Chapman to the runner-up finish at the 1960 national championships in Evansville, Ind. as a senior.

Stevens later became head coach of the Panthers for three seasons from 1964-67 after Don Perkins was forced to retire after a second heart attack in 1963.
