Bias was a two-sport star for Chapman in the 1950s, using his extraordinary jump to reach new heights on the basketball court and in track and field. He helped guide the Panther hoops squad to its first-ever NCAA tournament berth in 1956-57 scoring 453 points that season and averaging 16.8 points and was named to the All-Tournament team at the Redlands Tournament. He also set a school record of 38 points in a game versus Whittier during that same season. Since then only six Panthers have eclipsed that mark.

Bias was also a fantastic track and field athlete, setting a school record in the hop-step-jump, as well as placing as high as second in the country at the NAIA finals in 1957. In 1957-58, he broke his own school record in the hop-step-jump with a mark of 46' 1/2", while also competing in the high jump and broad jump.
