Young was an integral part of Chapman's 1968 College Division national championship baseball team as the Panthers' first baseman. He earned All-Conference honors as well as District VIII Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round (16th overall) of the 1969 Major League Baseball draft and spent 10 seasons in the Detroit and St. Louis organizations. He had a brief callup to the Tigers in 1971, appearing in two games and batting .500 (2-for-4).

After working as a scout for several Major League organizations, he made his biggest impact on the baseball world as the founder and president of Reviving Baseball in Innercities (RBI) in 1989 and Major League Baseball has utilized the program to foster the development and provide baseball opportunities for children in impoverish neighborhoods.
