LA VERNE, Calif. – Freshman Leighanne Estabrook scored six times and sophomore Camille Chiang scored four more to lead the Chapman University women's water polo team to a 14-13 win at La Verne to end the season. The teams agreed to a bonus game for each squad to wrap up the season.
The Panthers trailed for the majority of the match, trailing by as many as three goals at the end of the first quarter. However, the Panthers climbed out of the early hole to tie it at 8-8 on a goal from senior Diana Khaled Hattar. La Verne clawed its way back up and led by 11-9 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Chiang converted on a 5-meter shot to bring the Panthers back within one and Hattar tied it at 11-11 with 6:49 still to play. Two minute later, Callie Malone put the Panthers on top and Estabrook scored less than 30 seconds later to make it 13-11 on a four-goal run to start the fourth quarter.
La Verne and Chapman traded the next two goals as Estabrook scored her sixth of the match with just under two minutes left to make 14-12. La Verne made it interesting with a goal with just 87 seconds remaining but Estabrook came up with a key steal and the Panthers were able to run out the clock to get the win.
Chapman picked up its second win of the season and will end the shortened season 2-5.
