ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell 11-7 to Redlands in the SCIAC Tournament semifinal. The Panthers' shortened 2021 season came to a close with the loss.
Freshman Leighanne Estabrook led the Panthers with three goals in the match and sophomore Sophie Salstrom made 10 saves in goal.
Chapman scored on its first possession when Julia Bridges hit the back of the net just 56 seconds into the match. Redlands scored the next two goals and never trailed again as the Bulldogs advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Championship Match at Cal Lutheran tomorrow.
Camille Chiang took advantage of the first of two 5-meter shot chances to pull the Panthers even in the first quarter but Redlands' Tori Zielinski deflected the next 5-meter try into the post for one of her 15 saves.
The Bulldogs had a 3-2 lead at the end of the first and led 5-3 at halftime. The teams traded goals throughout the third quarter with freshman Callie Malone pulling Chapman back within one when she buried a shot from distance to make it 7-6.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as they pulled away with three goals in the fourth while holding Chapman scoreless.
The Panthers finish the pandemic-shortened 2021 season 1-5 and will return for a full season in 2022.
