Men's soccer suffers overtime loss in return at Cal Lutheran

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Cal Lutheran in its first of two matches this spring. The Panthers made their return to the field for the first time since the end of the 2019 season.

Junior Tobi Howe put Chapman on the board just 3:34 into the match. He rocketed a shot from 35 yards out and skipped it past the keeper for a 1-0 Chapman lead. Cal Lutheran drew even in the 31st minute and the match was 1-1 at halftime.

The Kingsmen went up seven minutes into the second half but the lead lasted only a few minutes. Junior Thomas Pierce's free kick from 35 yards out swung into the box where freshman Paul Duke flicked into the goal just inside the near post to even the match at 2-2.

Sophomore Victor Jacinto made five of his seven saves in the second half to keep the Panthers even and force an overtime. In the 100th minute, a cross into the far post found CLU's Christian Gonzalez alone and he headed in the golden goal for the host Kingsmen.

The Panthers will play one home match this spring when they take on Irvine Valley College at 7 p.m. on May 5.
