Men's soccer draws with La Verne

The Panthers' two goals were scored in a 42 second window.

ORANGE, Calif. – A quick lead faded over time as the Chapman University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with La Verne. Chapman's two goals came less than a minute apart.

Hudson Weinberger opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season. He met the keeper at a through ball near the top of the box, settled the bouncing ball, evaded the keeper and fired it into the netting for a 2-1 lead.

It took just 42 seconds for Chapman to get on the board again. This time Oliver Adams played in Leo Wells behind the back line and Wells buried the opportunity for a 2-0 lead just 15 minutes into the match.

La Verne clawed its way back in with a pair of goals on set pieces. In the 31st minute, Joel Trejo bent in a free kick to make it 2-1 before halftime. Trejo's corner kick also led to the game-tying goal in the 56th minute that brought the match even at 2-2.

As the game progressed, both teams generated opportunities but the goalkeepers denied all of them to keep the match tied. Joshua Simonton made two of his six saves in a quick window, denying Chapman on the doorstep. Rhys Lindhorst pushed another free kick into the cross bar late in the match and the defense helped him sweep away another dangerous opportunity.

The Panthers finish the regular season at Redlands on Wednesday as they try to stay in a top-5 spot n the standings to qualify for the SCIAC Tournament.
