REDLANDS, Calif. – The winning goal was scored with just 13 seconds left as the Chapman women's water polo team fell 10-9 at Redlands in its first contest in over a full calendar year. Sophomore Camille Chiang and freshman Leighanne Estabrook each scored a hat trick in the loss.
The match was back and forth throughout as Chapman went up 4-3 in the first quarter but Redlands had it tied up 5-5 at halftime. Chiang needed just 59 seconds to score her first goal of the season and the Panthers went up 3-1 after Estabrook's first career goal.
The 3-1 lead turned out to be the biggest advantage for either side during the back and forth contest that came down to the final seconds. The Bulldogs tied the match at 3-3 before Chiang's second goal of the opening quarter gave Chapman a 4-3 advantage.
With the score tied at halftime, the teams traded leads multiple times in the third before the quarter came to a close with the score tied 8-8. The defenses stepped up in the fourth but Redlands broke through with a go-ahead goal with 4:30 remaining.
Estabrook completed her hat trick with 2:28 remaining to even the match at 9-9. With just 13 seconds left, Katrina Nielsen delivered the deciding blow as she found the back of the net for the game-winner.
Sophomore Sophie Salstrom made 11 saves in the match and senior Diana Khaled Hattar scored a pair of goals.
The Panthers take on Redlands again on Apr. 10 when the Bulldogs visit Allred Pool for an 11 a.m. contest.
