Goodspeed tallies nine saves in water polo's loss to Claremont-M-S

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-5, 5-1 SCIAC) earlier this evening. Despite losing 9-4, senior goalkeeper Kerry Goodspeed led the Panthers (5-12, 1-4 SCIAC) in the cage with nine saves and four steals.

The Athenas went up 2-0 early in the first quarter, scoring back-to-back goals in the first two minutes. The next goal didn't come until there were less than two minutes left in the second quarter, when freshman Audrey Hattori netted one to make the score 2-1. Claremont freshman Amelia Ayala scored the last goal of the half at the buzzer, giving the Athenas a 3-1 lead heading into the second half.

After two consecutive Claremont goals, Panther senior Julia Furtado answered with a goal of her own with 45 seconds left to play in the third. The fourth quarter saw more Athenas action as Claremont scored three consecutive goals to take a six-point lead. Freshman Paige Gurich netted one with just over 3:40 left to play but Athenas junior Haley Gibbs answered right back with another Claremont goal. Senior Andi Sandoval netted the final goal of the game with just over a minute left to play, but the Athenas took home their seventh consecutive victory.

On top of her goal, Hattori tallied two assists, three steals and an earned ejection. Senior Mary Welton, who ranks second in the SCIAC in steals, recorded four more steals tonight as well as two earned ejections. Freshman driver Emily Whitney won all three of her sprints, giving Chapman possession of the ball to begin the second, third and fourth quarters.

The Panthers head to Caltech tomorrow evening but return to Allred Olympic Pool for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24. They will take on Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. and California State University East Bay at 2 p.m.
