CLAREMONT, Calif. – Division III's No. 1-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and SCIAC Championships' top seed proved why it's been ranked first and undefeated in conference play, handing the fourth-seeded Chapman University women's water polo team a 16-4 loss in the semifinals of the championship tournament at Haldeman Pool on Saturday.
The Sagehens built an 8-0 lead midway through the second quarter before Chapman (13-15 overall, 5-5 SCIAC) finally got on the board with 2:40 left in the half on a goal by junior setter Kate Staskus. The Panthers cut the lead to 9-3 at halftime, but it was all Pomona-Pitzer in the second half. The Sagehens out-scored Chapman 7-1 over the final 16 minutes to earn a berth in the conference final on Sunday against No. 3 seed Whittier College.
Panthers' senior goalie Kirsten Spicer was tough in the cage despite allowing 16 goals, she made 11 saves. Senior attacker Emily Holmquist scored a pair of goals for Chapman.
Chapman will face No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the third-place match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
