WHITTIER, Calif. - The Chapman University women's water polo team dropped its first round game in the SCIAC Championships, a 12-6 loss to No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Slade Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.
Claremont (16-12 overall, 8-1 SCIAC) outscored the Panthers 8-3 in the second half, pulling away from a one-goal halftime lead. No. 7 seed Chapman (9-23 overall, 2-7 SCIAC) never led in the game, but goals by junior utility Riley Ford (first quarter) and freshman 2-meter Emiko Mizusawa (second quarter) kept things close, trailing 4-3 at the intermission.
The Athenas scored four of the first four goals in the third period and never looked back, led by a pair of goals from Alex Toohey who finished with a game-high four.
Junior goalie Jordan Gilmore made nine saves in goal for Chapman. The Panthers were looking to avenge a 14-13 double-overtime loss to Claremont during the regular season.
Chapman advances to the consolation bracket of the tournament and will face No. 9 seed Caltech on Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will return to the pool on Saturday night to face No. 6 seed Occidental College at 7 p.m.
