Women's Water Polo

Home winning streak snapped as Panthers fall to CMS

ORANGE, Calif.- In its first SCIAC match of the season, the Chapman University women's water polo team lost to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 12-6 at the Allred Aquatics Center on Wednesday. The loss marked the first for the Panthers in their home tank this season, dropping their home record to 3-1.

The Athenas jumped out to an early lead with three straight goals before Samantha Martin put the Panthers on the board, netting the first of her two goals with 3:05 remaining in the opening quarter.

It took just 20 seconds for Martin to strike again, opening up the second quarter with her second goal. The goal pulled the Panthers within one before the Athenas went on another 3-0 run, taking a 6-2 lead into halftime. Alyssa Filippelli and Rose Koper led the scoring for the Athenas in the first half, netting two goals each.

Sophomore goalie Kirsten Spicer, who missed the last six matches with an injury, took the place of starter Jordan Gilmore in the third quarter, but could not stop the offensive attack from CMS. Alex Toohey scored three of her game-high five goals in the quarter to push the lead to 9-3 heading into the final eight minutes.

The fourth quarter opened with back-to-back goals from freshman Keely Dulaney and sophomore Riley Ford, shortening the deficit to 9-5. The rally proved to be short-lived, however, as CMS returned the favor with a 4-0 run to lock up the win.

The Panthers will play their final non-conference home match on Wednesday, March 27 when they host visiting Siena College (NY). The spring break matchup will begin at 11 a.m.
