ORANGE, Calif. – Leading by four at halftime, the Chapman
University women's water polo team broke the game open with
seven unanswered goals to start the third quarter as they went on
to a 20-6 win over Caltech on Sunday morning at the Allred Aquatics
Center. The win ends the Panthers' five-game losing streak.
With a 6-2 lead, Chapman (5-11) scored seven times in the first
five minutes of the third quarter, highlighted by two goals from
freshman utility Rachel Graham and two from
sophomore driver Fernanda Gallo Moreno. Caltech
ended Chapman's run with a goal from sophomore Erin
Hoops with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter to make the
score 13-3.
After Caltech (1-4) scored, Chapman answered with
four-consecutive goals from four different players to start the
final quarter, while pushing its lead to 17-3. Two of the goals
during that run came from freshman driver Mandy
Sheehan who finished the game with a team-high three,
equaling her season total.
Over the final five minutes of the game, the teams played each
other even with three goals apiece. Freshman center Hanna
Dodd had two of the final three Caltech goals and finished
with a game-high four scores.
In the first half, Caltech used its scrappy defense and strong
play from goalie Panna Felson to keep the game
close. Chapman jumped ahead 1-0 in the first quarter on a goal by
freshman Ani Marganian only to see Caltech tie the
game less than two minutes later. The Panthers then scored five
straight goals to take a 6-1 second quarter lead.
