Women's Water Polo

Second doubleheader split for water polo in as many days

ORANGE, Calif. – For the fourth time this season, the Chapman University women's water polo team split a doubleheader, as they lost 9-6 to Carthage College but won the second game 14-8 over the University of La Verne on Saturday at the Allred Aquatics Center. The Panthers finished the Chapman University Women's Water Polo Tournament with a 2-2 record.

Game 1: Carthage College 9, Chapman University 6
With a 2-0 lead midway through the second quarter, Chapman gave up three-consecutive Carthage goals including two by junior driver Kimmy Genian to fall behind 3-2 with 2:35 remaining in the half. Genian finished with a game-high six scores.

Less than a minute later, Chapman evened the score at 3-3 on a five-meter shot from sophomore 2M Arielle Worthington. Genian then scored twice in the final minute of the second quarter to put Carthage up 5-3 at halftime. The Panthers could not get any closer than two scores for the remainder of the game. Worthington and sophomore driver Briana O'Keefe each finished with a team-high two goals while freshman goalie Alicia Wei had five blocks in her second-straight start.

Game 2: Chapman University 14, University of La Verne 8
The offense came alive for Chapman in its second game as they pulled out to a 6-2 first quarter lead, equaling their offensive output from the previous game. Six different players scored a goal for the Panthers in the first quarter highlighted by freshman driver Kellie Stump's first career goal. Nine Panthers scored in the game.

La Verne (1-10) narrowed the score to 6-3 with goals from sophomore utilities Ashley Forsberg and Claudia Sandoval but the Panthers answered right back with scores from freshman driver Mandy Sheehan and freshman utility Rachel Graham making the score 8-3 at halftime.

After a La Verne goal by Forsberg to start the second half, Chapman scored four of the next five goals to distance themselves as they built as much as a seven-goal lead in the fourth quarter. Graham tied her career-high with three scores on the afternoon while Wei had 13 blocks in goal for her second-career win.
