Three podium finishes highlight day two of SCIACs

ORANGE, Calif. — Day two of swim and dive SCIAC Championships proved equally as exciting as day one highlighted by three podium finishes across women's swimming where the high tops showed out and men's diving where the low tops dominated on one meter. Along the way, Panthers surrounded the pool deck with homemade signs, dawned red cowboy hats and held on to pink pom poms to cheer all evening.

In diving, senior star Reid Omilian won the SCIAC Championship on the one meter defeating three meter Champion from Pomona-Pitzer, Thomas Mathias. Omilian's own teammate and freshman phenom Aidan Trautwein finished All-SCIAC, taking third. Just 20 points separated the top three finishers. Omilian had 522.20 points in first and Trautwein had 507.70 points in third. Fellow senior star Jake Randazzo finished in fourth with 461.65 points.

On the swimming side, the high tops jumped on that momentum, placing third in the 400 medley relay to earn All-SCIAC Honors. Cora Buelow swam the backstroke, CJ Smith swam the breaststroke, Miranda Thompson swam the butterfly and Alyssa Kooy swam the freestyle to clinch the podium finish in the relay.

Back on the low tops end, Chapman made program history in the men's 50 freestyle A finals with three sprinters representing the program. Freshman breakout star Cooper Na broke through the pack, placing in fourth with a time of 20.55. It was the first year's first individual event final at SCIACs. Teammates Riley Coleman and Max Polovinkin finished directly behind him in the event final. Coleman went a 20.68 and Polovinkin went a 20.74.

James Galligan made splashes in the men's 200 Individual Medley final, breaking the school record twice in one day. In the finals, Galligan swam a blistering 1:50.81 to finish just over two-tenth of a second outside of making the podium. The race had the entire swim program on their feet cheering so loudly, some were wearing ear plugs to prevent permanent hearing loss.

Kooy, the sophomore sprint sensation, stirred up another exciting finish in the A Finals of the 50 freestyle dash going a 23.74 to finish in sixth. Kooy also set an unofficial new program record in the medley relay on her 100 yard freestyle.

The low tops also held it down strongly in the 400 medley relay. Brody Perkins, George Sholton, Alex Landmark and Na finished in fourth going a 3:23.89.

Overall, day two of SCIACs saw Chapman earn 31 new top 10 times, 20 personal bests, four new school records, three podium finishes and one new SCIAC Champion crowned. The low tops currently sit in third on the men's side with 298 points and the high tops sit in third as well with 172 points.

Day three of Championships will continue Friday afternoon highlighted by the high tops competing in the women's diving three meter finals. Swimming will do the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle relay. The day begins at 1:30 PM for diving and 6 PM for swimming at East Los Angeles College.
