ORANGE, Calif. – It is with a tremendous amount of sadness that Chapman University Athletics shares the news of the passing of volunteer softball coach Greg Crandall.
Best known simply as "Coach Greg," Crandall has been around the Chapman softball program for nearly 25 years. A fierce supporter of the program, Crandall officially joined the team in 2002 as a strength and conditioning coach. He continued on as a volunteer assistant and a strong advocate until his passing.
He was a permanent fixture around El Camino Real Park when softball season rolled around, supporting the coaches and student-athletes in every way. He assisted with recruiting, scouting, field maintenance and much more while constantly remaining a voice of encouragement in the dugout.
His financial support of the program can be seen around the park on game days – from the padding and banners around the field to the ATV used to drag the field between games of a doubleheader.
Crandall helped the Panthers to multiple regional appearances first as an NCAA Division III Independent and, later, as a member of the SCIAC. The Panthers also advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series twice with Crandall on staff.
Chapman Athletics sends its condolences to Director of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Pam Gibbons and the rest of Crandall's family. A celebration of Coach Greg's memory will be held at a later date.
