ORANGE, Calif. – A 56-year old school record went down on Saturday to highlight the day at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational for the Chapman University track & field teams. The men's 4x100m relay team, senior Annika Carlson and junior Mason Fara all had record-breaking runs.
Jonah Kim, Mason Fara, Nick Burton and Wyn Smoole combined for a 41.34 in the men's 4x100m relay – bettering the school record by three-tenths of a second. The record of 41.64 had stood for over 50 years after being set in 1969 by a group of four men who have since been enshrined in Chapman's Hall of Fame – Don Hurzeler, Bing Howell, Doug Eckert and Jim Frost. The Panthers' record-breaking relay placed them second in the event.
Carlson also had a record-breaking run in the 1500m with a time of 4:31.74, bettering the existing school record by over six seconds. Her time is the fastest in the SCIAC this season by over five seconds and ranks 14th nationally. She placed fourth at the large invitational with teams from Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
Fara lowered his school record in the 100m dash with a career-best time of 10.69, taking third in the event. He was just one one-hundredth of a second behind Pomona-Pitzer's Gavin Doig for the fastest time in the SCIAC this year.
Charles lowered her SCIAC-best time in the 400m to break the Chapman record with a time of 56.46. Her time was the fastest in the SCIAC this season and ranks 21st in Division III.
The field events were led by Jesse McMillan and Isaac Robin. McMillan once again cleared five meters in the pole vault for his best mark of the outdoor season. He now has the third-highest mark in Division III. Robin placed second in the tripe jump with a mark of 13.70 meters (44-feet, 11.5-inches).
The Panthers will comete at multiple invitationals this week before gearing up for the SCIAC Championships on April 26-27.
