Women's soccer looks to return to SCIAC postseason in 2024

8/30/2024 11:40:00 AM

ORANGE, Calif — Women's soccer gears up for the 2024 season after reaching the SCIAC postseason semi-finals in 2023, falling to the eventual National Champion Cal Lutheran.

Key Matchups

Home Opener

The Panthers open the season at home against Oberlin on Sunday, September 1. The contest is the season opener for Chapman women's soccer. It's the second time these teams have met on the pitch. Chapman won the only meeting in 2018, 1-0.

Non-Conference Schedule

Women's soccer will stay in California for the duration of their regular season schedule, but they will take a trip up the coast to Santa Cruz during the first week of September. Chapman takes on the University of Chicago and Pacific (Ore.) while in Northern California. Their non-conference schedule concludes with an October home match against UC Santa Cruz.

SCIAC Slate

The Panthers face Whittier, Caltech, Occidental, and reigning champion Pomona-Pitzer. For the remainder of conference play, the Panthers will host Redlands and Claremont-M-S early in the season. They travel to La Verne and Cal Lutheran to wrap up the team's 12 SCIAC contests.

Key Players

Returners

Women's soccer returns two-time All-SCIAC selection Jenna Urrabazo. She's led the team in scoring in her first two seasons. Urrabazo was a second-team selection as a freshman and first-teamer in her sophomore campaign.

Chapman returns its second and third leading scorers in Pilar Vanheusden, four, and Sidney Karjian, 3. Both entering their sophomore seasons, the forwards showed flashes of skill numerous times in 2023.

Both goalkeepers, Aaliyah Bustamante and Brianna Zamora, returned. Emma Harper is back for a fifth season to anchor the defense.

New Faces

12 new Panthers join the Chapman women's soccer team for the 2024 season, all freshmen.

Ella Tovar joins her sister Lauren on the squad. The two Tovars aren't the only siblings on the women's soccer team. Andrea DiVittorio, a freshman defender, is the sister of football safety Thomas DiVittorio.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach Courtney Calderon returns for her 21st season at the program's helm. She is 172-148-35 in her career.

Breanna Carrillo returns for her second season on the staff. New goalies coach Isaac Diaz joins the two.

Postseason Format

This season the SCIAC adopted and brand new format for the conference tournament. Five teams will be selected to compete in the tournament with a fourth seed vs. fifth seed play-in game. The winner of that match takes on the first seed in the semi finals, while the second seed and third seed play in the other semi final contest.
