ORANGE, Calif. – Several school records fell as the Chapman University track & field teams returned to competition at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday. Kaylee Smith and Ashley Granger both took down program records.
Smith ran a 56.99 in the 400m dash to break the school record set last year and ran a 25.25 in the 200m dash to finish ahead of the previous record. Allie Kremer had a slightly faster 200m time at 25.23 but ran with a wind reading over two meters per second. Smith finished eighth in the 400 while Kremer and Smith finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in the 200.
Granger's record came with a hammer throw of 40.14 meters (131-feet, 8-inches) to place 11th at the meet.
On the men's side, Gil Bothwell and Wyn Smoole each etched their names into a record book with top marks in the Division III era of Chapman's history. Smoole's 57.39 in the 400m hurdles was a new best and Bothwell's time of 3:58.99 in the 1500m was a new Chapman DIII best.
Top finishes came from Isaac Robin, Annika Carlson, Mason Fara, Jesse McMillan and the relay teams. Robin was the only Panther to win an event as he won the triple jump with a mark of 13.40 meters (43-feet, 11.75 inches). He also placed sixth in the long jump.
Carlson came in second in the 5k just hours after scoring six goals in a lacrosse win for Panthers. She ran an 18:11.76. McMillan placed second in the pole vault with an outdoor season-best of 4.80 meters (15-feet, 9-inches). Fara took third in the 400m with a 48.49.
Both 4x100 relay teams took third place and both 4x400m relay teams to second in another strong performance for Chapman. The women's 4x100 relay team ran a 47.78 while the 4x400 relay finished at 3:53.27. The men's 4x100 ran a 42.14 while the 4x400 relay put together a 3:20.15.
The Panthers will compete in three different meets next week.
