MONTEREY PARK, Calif. –
Cole Kershner successfully defended his 50 free title to highlight day two of the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships for the Chapman University swim & dive teams.
Jake Randazzo and
Reid Omilian also found their way back to the podium on the 1-meter board.
Kershner came into the championship meet as the reigning SCIAC champion in the 50 free. He set the tone with a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 20.30 in his morning prelim to earn the top seed in finals. In the afternoon's finals, he stayed out in front of the field with a time of 20.45 to win his second title.
On the diving board,
Jake Randazzo followed up his 3-meter title with a runner-up finish on the 1-meter board. He scored a 520.85 to take second while Omilian scored a 506.00 to take third.
Rhys Davies' seventh place finish also earned the Panthers some more points on the diving boards.
Both Panther relay teams also reached the podium for the second day in a row as both the Low Tops and High Tops took third place in the 200 free relay.
Just a day after making a relay podium for the first time, the Low Tops found themselves with another medal around their neck and another third-place finish. The school record shattering relay also recorded another first as the first Low Tops' relay to record an NCAA "B" Cut. The 1:21.46 also ranks among the 15 fastest times in all of Division III. Kershner,
Simon Jacobs, Maxim Polovinkin and
Riley Coleman combined for the historic effort. Jacobs and Coleman also scored individually in the 50 free as Jacobs took fifth behind Kershner's victory and Coleman took 11th in the consolation final.
The High Tops squad of Ryanne Doherty, Tatum Chambers, Megan Lei and Avery Hall put together a time of 1:35.74 to take third as well. The team set another Chapman record. Individually, Doherty finished 10th in the 50 free with Hall taking 11th. Lei finished 16th.
After breaking the Chapman 500 free record in his morning race, Trent Calloway broke it again in finals to win the consolation final and take ninth overall. Calloway swam a 4:34.49.
Kiana Tanizaki-Hudson has her best events in the final two days of the meet but started her individual events with a sixth place finish and a school record in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:07.15 was the fastest in Chapman history in the event. Summer Solomon also took 15th.
The Low Tops are sitting comfortably in third behind CMS and Pomona-Pitzer but well in front of Caltech after the second day. The High Tops are in fourth but have closed in on Occidental in third place, trailing by just six points, and are two points in front of Cal Lutheran.
Tomorrow's schedule features the 400 IM, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 free, 400 medley relay and the women's 3-meter diving competition.
