Lloyd notches 700th win in sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ORANGE, Calif. — Softball continued its dominant ways sweeping a 2022 World Series team in the WPI Engineers to the tune of 5-1 and 8-4 victories, notching Janet Lloyd's 700th career win in her 29th season as head coach.

Game 1 - W, 5-1

Rose Malen picked up right where she left off on Saturday and was lights out against the engineers. She allowed only one run on six hits while striking out seven hitters in six innings pitched. She was extremely efficient as well, throwing 63 strikes and only 21 balls, walking just one hitter.

Offensively, the Panthers were slow to start, but after surrendering the lead in the fourth, bounced right back taking the lead in the bottom half. Samantha Kennedy led off the inning with the team's first hit of the game, a triple, and Shea Higa, who drove in two runs in game one, drove in the equalizer, in Kennedy.

From then on the Panthers scored a total of five unanswered, with the help of a few defensive miscues, to secure the win.

Game 2 - W, 8-4

Like game one, the Panthers fell behind first, but this time it was a large three-run deficit to start the game. Simi Lauwers, who would eventually earn the win, gave up a homer to her counterpart in the circle, forcing the Panthers to claw their way back.

Kennedy grabbed the Panthers first hit of the game again, this one cleared the bases, which were loaded via two walks and a hit by pitch, all coming with two outs.

The flood gates opened in the fourth and fifth as Chapman scored four unanswered, gathering five of their eight hits in a game-clinching rally.

The bottom of the order was fantastic in game two as Summer Lake and Miranda Murphy combined for four hits and five of the Panther's runs in the seven and nine spots.
