Men's tennis drops close match to CNU

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team fell 5-4 to visiting Christopher Newport on Sunday. In a match that could have easily come either way, CNU players pulled out a few more tiebreak sets to claim the team win.

The tone was set early as Chapman's top two doubles teams fought hard but fell 8-6. The freshman duo of Josh Blinder and Steven Ferry captured a doubles point with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 match.

Ferry captured a 6-3, 7-6 win in the No. 6 match to capture another point for the Panthers. Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets but four of those five had at least an extra game, if not a tiebreaker, to decide a set. Blinder dropped a tough match on the No. 5 court, falling 7-6, 7-6.

Sophomore Adrien Rooney took the No. 3 match 6-2, 7-6 and freshman Caleb Wilkins won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 to grab the Panthers' other two points. Straight set wins on courts two and four for the Captains claimed the team victory for the visitors.

The Panthers kicked off a packed March schedule that features 10 matches – all at home. Next up is a match against No. 7 Bowdoin on Mar. 9 at 2 p.m.
