CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team competed in the ITA Division III Fall West Regional with Matthew Dewey advancing to a consolation championship match. The Panthers also had two doubles teams win their first match in the main draw.
Dewey dropped his first match in Flight B but won a three-set match to start the consolation draw. After opening his quarterfinal match with a 6-4 set win, his opponent retired with an injury to send him into the semifinals. Another three-set match saw Dewey and Lucas Solko trade the first two set before Dewey pulled out the 11-9 tiebreaker to advance to the championship.
He dropped a tough first set in the championship match and then fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to take second in the Flight B consolation.
Ian Jordan and James Krantz opened their doubles journey in the main draw with an 8-3 win but fell 8-4 in the round of 16. Seif El Salawy and Gespard Lemaitre outlasted their first round opponent with an 8-7(7-5) win in the first round but fell 8-2 in the second round.
Zach Whittington played his way into the semifinals of the Flight A consolation draw, winning 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 to meet Benjamin Wang in the semifinals. Whittington took an early lead with a tiebreak win in the first set but Wang came back to win the match 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 and 12-10 in the third set tiebreaker.
Aram Izmirian also advanced to the quarterfinals in the same consolation draw as Whittington before withdrawing with an injury.
The Panthers fall tournament season wraps up with the regional tournament. They return in the spring for the dual season.
