Montemor scores a brace in win over La Verne

Box Score

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Anna Montemor helped lift the Chapman University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over La Verne earlier this evening, scoring both goals in the victory.

After 36 minutes of scoreless action, Montemor found the back of the net on a rocket of a shot from nearly 10 yards outside the 18-yard box. The striker hit the ball hard, forcing Leopards' goalkeeper Hanien Samara to mishandle the ball. Samara tried to recover before the ball crossed the plain into the goal, but the deed was done and the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.

Montemor's second goal came just under 20 minutes into the second half. Fellow junior Riley Pidgeon turned upfield with space to dribble and found Montemor streaking across the field. A perfectly-placed slotted ball found Montemor's feet and the Panthers' leading goal scorer hit a driven ball to the far post, finding the side netting to give Chapman its final 2-0 lead.

The Panthers held La Verne to zero shots in the first half while taking seven themselves. The Leopards upped the pressure in the second half, taking four shots, three of them on frame.

The Panthers dominated in the attacking third, with 64 percent of their possession coming in La Verne's own half. They earned eight corner kicks while holding the Leopards to none.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Bland tallied three saves in the effort, all coming in the second half. Samara was peppered with shots, forced to make eight saves on the night.

Chapman's defense proved to be solid yet again, as seniors Faith Holloway and Stephanie Fox, sophomore Cate Combi and freshman Shannon Coyle played the full 90 minutes and tallied the Panthers' eighth shutout of the season. Sophomores Jessie Roux and Rory Biles joined the back line as the only other field players to play all 90 minutes.

The Panthers return home on Saturday, Oct. 19 to host Caltech in their annual Pink-Out game for Breast Cancer Awareness at 11 a.m.
