CLAREMONT, Calif. – A doubles sweep led the sixth-seeded Chapman University men's tennis team to a 6-3 win over fifth-seeded Caltech in the fifth place match of the SCIAC Tournament on Sunday. The Panthers ended the season on a high note with wins in three of their last four matches.

Chris Damion and Josh Sarsfield set the tone with the first point of the match coming in an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Brett Buford and Charlie Werman followed shortly after with an 8-3 win in the No. 1 doubles match.

Sam Mitteldorf and Mathew Mead went to a tiebreak in the No. 2 match but pulled out the 8-8 (7-3) win to complete the doubles sweep and give Chapman a 3-0 lead.

Buford did not surrender a single point in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to put the Panthers one victory away from a team win. Caltech gained a point with a win in the No. 6 match but Werman sealed the team win for the Panthers with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 2 match.

After the outcome was decided, Caltech pick up wins in the Nos. 3 and 4 matches but Sarsfield pulled out the win at No. 5 to end the season.

Chapman ended the season strong with three wins in its final four matches. The Panthers finished 5-15 overall. They took sixth in the SCIAC standings after the regular season but finished fifth in the tournament thanks to a strong finish.
