CLAREMONT, Calif. – The sixth-seeded Chapman University men's tennis team advanced to the fifth-place match of the SCIAC Tournament with a 5-1 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday. The Panthers began the tournament on Friday with a 5-0 loss to Redlands.

After Friday's sweep, the Panthers took an early advantage with a pair of doubles wins. Junior Charlie Werman led the Panthers to the 5-1 win over Cal Lutheran as he and partner Brett Buford won the No.  1 doubles match 8-4. Josh Sarsfield and Hunter Morris won by the same score in the No. 2 match.

Chapman wasted no time in earning three straight set singles wins to clinch the match. Werman breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 2 match. In the No. 5 match, Sarsfield won 6-1, 6-3 to put the Panthers a point away from clinching.

With Morris, Buford, Sam Mitteldorf and Rasmus Helms all leading in their respective matches, it was Helms who was the first to score the clinching point. He won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 match for the Panthers' fifth point.

Chapman will take on Caltech tomorrow at 10 a.m. in a battle for fifth place in the SCIAC Tournament.
