Softball splits with George Fox in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team split with George Fox University in a non-conference doubleheader at El Camino Park on Friday afternoon. The Bruins came from behind to defeat the Panthers 5-3 in Game 1, but Chapman shutout George Fox 1-0 in Game 2.

Game 1: George Fox 5, Chapman 3

Chapman started out strong with back-to-back singles to left field by sophomore Amber Perez and junior Lisa Perez in the second inning to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead.

However, a double in the top of the third inning by Bruins' Rebecca Pridmore started a George Fox rally to come back from a 2-0 deficit. A suicide squeeze followed by a RBI triple in the third inning gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead. George Fox continued it's scoring in the fifth inning with a base hit to extend its lead 4-2.

Amber Perez would record an additional RBI in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Bruins lead 4-3 but the Bruins would hold the Panthers 5-3 score going into the sixth. The sophomore finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

Game 2: Chapman 1, George Fox 0

Once again, Chapman jumped on the board first with Amber Perez racking up a triple at the bottom of the second to be knocked in by freshman IF Kristen Weiser who singled up the middle to give Chapman a 1-0 lead. That would be the only two hits Bruins' Amanda Woods would give up to the Panthers.

Chapman defense was led by junior pitcher Natalie Both who recorded five strike outs while giving up just three hits for her first win of the season.

The Panthers will return to conference play Saturday, Feb. 14 as they travel to Whittier College with games set at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Chapman will then travel to Texas for six intra-regional games, including having to face No. 3 East Texas Baptist Sunday, Feb. 22, as well as No. 6 Texas-Tyler on Monday, Feb. 23.
