REDLANDS, Calif. – The SCIAC Track & Field Championships wrapped up on Sunday with the Chapman University women's team taking second and the men's team placing fifth. Wyn Smoole, Eva Ndoye and Isaac Robin topped the podium to lead the Panthers through the final day of the championship meet.
Smoole put up top marks in three of the day's five events to maintain his lead in the decathlon and set a new school record with 6,447 points. He edged out a win in the 110m hurdles to start the day and was a half of a meter better than the rest of the field in the pole vault to pad his lead. He ended the day with a winning time in the 1500m run to hold off the competition and grab the SCIAC gold medal.
Ndoye also set a new school record, bettering her own record on her sixth and final attempt. While she was well ahead of the competition heading into the final round, she still put up a school record mark of 12.43 meters (40-feet, 9-inches) to top the podium. Shauna Anders also placed third to give a podium majority to the Panthers.
Robin also broke his own school record on his last attempt and climbed on top of the podium for the third time in three years in the triple jump. He covered 14.52 meters (47-feet, 7.75-inches) to surpass his own school record by 20 centimeters and climb to 20th on the national leaderboard.
The women's relay teams each ran to a spot on the podium as the 4x100m relay team placed third to start the day on the track. The 4x400m relay team battled through all four legs and crossed the finish line in second place. Sydney Mills, Makenna Lizarde, Audrey Helwig and Sarah Charles combined for the runner-up finish at 4:53.30.
Charles and Helwig also earned All-SCIAC honors with podium finishes in the 400m. The races featured a 2-3-4 finish for Chapman as Mills came in right behind the All-SCIAC duo. Charles led the way with a runner-up finish at 57.88
The 400m continued to be a strength on both Chapman teams as the men's race featured Panthers in third, fourth and sixth. Charley McCarthy led the trio with an All-SCIAC finish in third place and a time of 48.71. Andrew Vasquez followed behind in fourth and Andrew Martorano took sixth.
The Chapman women's team took second for the third year in a row. With 179.5 points, the Panthers finished behind only CMS in the team standings. The men's team scored 87 points to finish fifth – just half a point behind Occidental in fourth.
The women's triple jump finals also featured four Panthers. Lindsey Gray led the quartet as the only Panther on the podium with a second place finish to follow Saturday's long jump SCIAC title. Her mark of 11.36 meters (37-feet, 3.25-inches) broke her own school record.
Brenda Daza also took her second runner-up finish of the meet with a second place finish in the 5k. She finished with a time of 18:00.18 as she pulled ahead for second place in the home stretch of the distance event.
Chloe Mitchell placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 41.29 meters (135-feet, 5-inches). Her runner up mark came on her second attempt.
With several Panthers within the top-50 of their respective events, Chapman will next compete in last chance meets over the next few weeks and will look to qualify for the NCA Division III Championships.
