THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – An 8-1 victory for the Chapman University women's tennis team clinched the 2021 SCIAC series over Cal Lutheran. The Panthers defeated the Regals for the third consecutive time.
The Panthers started the day with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Tatum Phillips and Olivia Desso needed a tiebreaker but pulled out an 8-7 win to give Chapman the early 2-1 advantage. Aliya Allyn and Liza Antonova won 8-2 at No. 2.
With a 2-1 advantage, the Panthers quickly clinched the match with four straight-set victories. Allyn won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 match and senior Madison Ross breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match. In the No. 6 match, Racquel Fhima won 6-1, 6-2 and the Panthers clinched the match.
Desso also won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 match for the fourth straight-set Chapman victory. Both Phillips and Vasilisa Trofimova were pushed to a third set and both pulled out narrow victories in a super tiebreak third set to complete the singles sweep.
Chapman and Cal Lutheran will square off one more time on Friday at 3 p.m. in the Lastinger Tennis Center.
