Women's tennis drops heartbreaker to CNU

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 to visiting Christopher Newport on Sunday. The back and forth match needed four tiebreakers and two more sets needed an extra game.

The Panthers took an early lead with a pair of doubles wins. After falling 8-1 on the No. 1 court, juniors Madison Ross and Vasilisa Trofimova won 8-6 on court three. Sophomore Liza Antonova and freshman Aliya Allyn edged out the 8-7 win in the No. 2 match for the 2-1 team lead.

Trofimova pulled out a three-set singles win after dropping the first set 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 match. Antonova also captured a three-set victory 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 match. However, the Captains earned the wins on the four other courts to complete the comeback victory.

Allyn won her first set but fell in three sets at No. 4. Sophomore Tatum Phillips forced a tiebreaker in her second set but fell 6-3, 7-6. The Captains took the remaining matches in straight sets.

The Panthers played their first of nine consecutive home matches in March. They are back at Lastinger Tennis Center on Tuesday to take on Mary Washington at 1 p.m.
