Saunders continues to shine for Panthers

ANAHEIM, Calif. -The Chapman University women's tennis team hosted Vassar College Tuesday looking to get their first win of the season but fell short 6-3 at Anaheim Hills Tennis Club.

The Panthers started out with an early lead as senior Andrea Hammer and junior Madeline Saunders took on Hanna McGuire and Kelsey Van Noy winning by a score of 8-3. The win was the pair's fourth consecutive win this season.

Vassar went on to sweep the other two doubles matches in convincing fashion by a score of 8-0.

In singles play, Hammer took on Kate Christensen in the No. 1 spot.  Hammer pushed her to 7 points in both sets, but fell by a score of 7-6 and 7-5.

Saunders, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, took on Courtney Geiss as she would get the Panthers second win of the day winning both sets by a score of 6-2. The singles win was Saunders third of the season.

The third win of the day came from Sophomore Thimanthi Withana, playing in the No. 5 singles spot who drove her opponent Morgane Flournoy to a tiebreaker.  Withana dropped the first set 6-1, then won the second set 7-6 and took the tiebreaker by a score of 10-6.

The Panthers will continue their home stand Sunday, March 20 against St. Lawrence University.
