Women's tennis finishes fifth in SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team regular season came to a close at the SCIAC Championship Tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps over the weekend of May 2. Chapman (10-11 overall, 6-5 SCIAC) closed the regular season earning fifth-place in conference and fifth in the SCIAC tournament.

The fifth-seed Panthers opened the weekend on Friday morning with a 5-2 loss to fourth-seed Redlands. In the afternoon, Chapman then went on to defeat Occidental 7-2. The fifth place match on Saturday then placed Chapman against Cal Lutheran with the Panthers solidifying fifth-place in a 6-3 victory over the Poets.

On Friday, Chapman fell to No. 4 Redlands 5-2. Chapman earned one win in doubles with a 9-7 victory by senior Sophia Duong and sophomore Madeline Saunders on court No. 2 to defeat the Bulldogs. Senior Andrea Hammer then earned the Panthers only victory in singles play by defeating Lauren Villanueva from the No. 3 spot after falling 6-3 in set one, but battling back to win the next sets 6-2 across the board.

In the afternoon, Chapman defeated Occidental 7-2 opening the match with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play including a shutout in No. 2 doubles from Duong and Saunders. Chapman then secured its win when Hammer defeated Amber Gadsden 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

In the fifth place match on Saturday morning, Chapman took the lead 2-1 in doubles matches with an 8-4 win from senior Rachel Fox and Hammer in the No. 1 spot. Duong and Saunders then earned their third consecutive pairs victory from the No. 2 spot 8-4 over the Regals. The Panthers finally secured their victory when Hammer defeated Emily Werman of Cal Lutheran 6-2, 2-6, and 6-1.

Saunders and Hammer each finished the weekend 5-1, including a three match hot-streak from Hammer. Saunders closed her sophomore season leading the team with a 16-9 record this season from the No. 3 spot.
