Hammer leads Panthers to shutout over Bates

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team bounced back from a tough conference loss on Saturday to defeat Bates College, 9-0 at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The Panthers swept doubles play and controlled individual action as well, winning in just two sets in five of the six matchups.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Andrea Hammer and junior Rachel Fox moved their record to a team-best 6-1 with an 8-1 victory over their Bates counterparts. Chapman's other doubles teams faced a bit more of a struggle, winning 8-6 and 8-5 in well-contested matchups. Overall this season, the Panthers have compiled a 16-4 record (.800 winning percentage) in doubles play with all twosomes posting winning records.

In individual play, Hammer held firmly to her No. 1 spot, earning the victory in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to move her season record to 5-2. Meanwhile, No. 3 junior Sophia Duong fought hard for her team-leading sixth individual win, coming from behind to defeat Bates' Elizabeth Erbafina in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 10-7).

Competing from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, seniors Kelley Klebenow and Anna Nelson earned straight set victories to push their season marks to 3-1 while freshman Madeline Saunders pushed her record to 4-3 with a straight set win of her own (6-1, 7-6) from the No. 4 position.

The Panthers will head on the road for their next match as they re-enter conference play with a showdown against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at 2 p.m. Following the match with the Sagehens, Chapman will play seven straight non-conference matched on their home court, spanning from March 9 to 22.
