Nineteen Panthers score in water polo's first home win

ORANGE, Calif. – Playing in its first match in over two weeks and still looking for its first home victory of the season, the Chapman University men's water polo team looked hungry on Saturday afternoon and took it to visiting Connecticut College with a resounding 23-8 win at the Allred Pool.

Chapman (3-3) had 19 different players score goals in the match and led from start to finish in its final tune up before SCIAC play begins on Wednesday.

Already leading 5-1 after the first quarter, junior driver Mark Alvarado scored back-to-back goals just 30 seconds apart to give the Panthers a 7-1 lead early in the second. Chapman would go on to score eight times in the quarter to lead 13-2 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Chapman again scored eight more times – each by a different player. Three Panther goalkeepers combined for 13 saves, including freshman Ian Decker who made five saves in the third quarter.

Senior drivers Jack Cutler and James Vigeant tied with Alvarado with two goals each to lead Chapman.

Junior Robert Spencer led Connecticut College (1-17) with four goals, including three in the fourth quarter.

Chapman will host Caltech on Wednesday at 4 p.m. to begin conference play.
