ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University women's basketball team
closed its season by defeating visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges
83-54 Tuesday night at the Hutton Center. On 'Senior Night',
the Panthers' only senior, G Linda Ly scored 10
points and had seven assists and was honored prior to the game.
Ly finished off her career with 1,079 points scored - one of
nine players in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark. Ly
tied for a season-high with her seven assists. The decorated
two-sport star nailed a three-pointer with her final career shot
before leaving the game late in the second half. A two-time
All-Independents selection, Ly finished second on Chapman's
Division III steals list with 204 in her career.
The Panthers started off with a big first half led by hot
shooting sophomore G Mary Petrie and her four
three-point field goals. Chapman began with an 11-0 run in the
first 4:17 and continued to build its lead to 26-4 after 9 minutes
of play. Petrie scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the first
half as the Panther led 40-20 at halftime.
Continuing into the second half, Chapman (14-11) stretched its
advantage to 34 points with 14:23 left in the game. Junior G
Tara Glennon was 5-for-5 from the field in the
second half, scoring 14 points total for the Panthers. Junior G
Casey Gomez finished with 12 points and five
rebounds.
For the Sagehens, Deirdre Chew led all scorers
with 19 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Anja
Hughes-Stinson was also in double-figures with 10 points.
A tough Chapman defense forced Pomona-Pitzer (5-19) to commit
37 turnovers throughout the game.
Chapman ended their regular season with three-game winning
streak and won 12 of its final 16 games.
