Women's basketball falls in SCIAC Tournament First Round

The Panthers finish the season with a 16-10 overall record.

ORANGE, Calif. – The season came to a close for the Chapman University women's basketball team with a 79-61 loss at fourth-seeded Redlands. Chapman finishes the 2025-26 season with a 16-10 overall record and a fifth-place finish in the SCIAC.

Makena Nitao led the Panthers with 19 points off the bench, making 8-of-15 shots and 2-of-4 three-point attempts. Maile Nakaji scored 12 points while Layla Woods and senior Aidan Sherfey each scored 10 points.

Sherfey and Woods were limited in the second half due to early foul trouble. Both picked up a fourth foul early in the third quarter. Despite the limited minutes, Sherfey scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds. Woods also scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds in less than 25 minutes before fouling out.

The Panthers were never able to find their rhythm offensively as the Bulldogs took the lead early on and stayed in control the rest of the game. Chapman shot 35.1 percent in the game, made just 4-of-17 beyond the three-point arc and committed 15 turnovers.

The defense forced 14 turnovers from Redlands but Chapman converted those into just 10 points while Redlands scored 24 points off turnovers.

Seniors Kali Cajala and Trinity Barretto each scored four points in their final game. Barretto dished out a pair of assists while Cajala grabbed six rebounds.

Chapman saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the season came to a close. Redlands advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Semifinal to take on top-seeded Cal Lutheran on Thursday.
