Chapman Athletics Hall of Famer Steve Simmons '65 passed away on June 4. Simmons' was a standout student-athlete at Chapman and later began a legendary coaching career. He was inducted to Chapman's Hall of Fame in 1983.

Simmons came to Chapman from LA City College to play basketball and run track. He particularly excelled on the track, setting multiple school records and capping his career with All-American honors in 1965. He was also named the Most Improved Player on the basketball team as a senior.

He returned to Chapman as an Assistant Coach for the track & field team, launching a highly decorated coaching career at the collegiate and international levels. He went on to become the Head Coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then Oregon State. His large amount of success at Cal Poly also earned him induction into that Hall of Fame as a Head Coach.

Simmons is one of just eight men in American history to serve on three Olympic coaching staff. He was the manager for the 1980 and 1984 USA Olympic teams before being named the team leader for all of USA Track & Field at the 1992 Olympics.

Chapman Athletics extends its condolences to Simmons' wife as well as their two children and five grandchildren.
