Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball takes down CMS to move on to SCIAC Tournament Championship

The Panthers set a SCIAC Tournament record with 16 made three-pointers.

ORANGE, Calif. – Cruz Billings led the Chapman University men's basketball team to a 79-68 upset win over second-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC Tournament semifinal. Billing led a record-setting shooting night from the Panthers.

Chapman made a SCIAC Tournament record 16 three-pointers to key its second upset of CMS this year. This one came on the road as Billings drained five of those 15 three-pointers during a 23-point night for the senior. Chapman's 16 made threes bettered Pomona-Pitzer's record of 15, set in 2009.

Joe Keegan knocked down three threes in the game with three more Panthers hitting multiple three-pointers. Keegan and Jake Heberle each scored 13 points while TJ Tittelfitz scored 12 off the bench.

Chapman was 16-for-34, shooting 47 percent on the night. In the first half, Chapman was 11-for-20 to build the early lead and key the upset win.

The Panthers took a 9-6 lead three minutes into the game and never trailed again. They held a double digit lead through much of the second back, limiting CMS to a few short runs and answering everytime to push the lead back to double digits.

Chapman first built a double digit lead with a 12-2 run over four minutes span just after the midway point of the first half. The Panthers led just 22-21 but opened up the lead to 34-23 with six minutes to go in the half. The lead went up to as much as 13 in the first half and 14 in the second half.

The Panthers will take on top-seeded and nationally-ranked Redlands on Sunday for the SCIAC's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Redlands, Calif.
