ORANGE, Calif. –
Madi Escobar scored five times but the Chapman University women's lacrosse team dropped its season-opener 17-13 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Panthers battled through all 60 minutes, trading goals through the first quarter and tying the game as late as the midway point of the third quarter. After Anna Burton's first career goal tied the game at 9-9, CMS went on to score five of the next six goals to put the game out of reach.
Escobar's five goals were a game-high and
Tade Scheid contributed one goal and three assists in a tighly contested game.
Camila Gabrian also made her debut in goal, making 10 saves.
An energetic Chapman defense came up with 11 caused turnovers and forced the Athenas into 24 turnovers overall. Four different Panthers had multiple caused turnovers, including
Zoey Stephenson. Stephenson scored once, assisted twice, caused two turnovers and scooped up four groundballs in her Panther debut.
Chapman remains at home to take on SCIAC-favorite Pomona-Pitzer in an early season Wednesday matchup at 7 p.m.
