Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer breaks NCAA scoring record in home win

ORANGE, Calif. — Three goals in 43 seconds. Two courtesy of Hudson Weinberger in 17 seconds. An NCAA record falls, and a player launches himself into the history books. That is what the Chapman University men's soccer program did on a hot, humid Wednesday afternoon against Occidental College. The Panthers also won the game 3-1, and leaped into second place in the conference standings.

Oliver Adams started off the scoring extravaganza by netting the first goal at the 14:21 mark of the first half. He booted the ball from the top left corner of the box to top right corner of the goal. Not even 25 seconds later, Weinberger went to work. Oliver Adams passed the ball up through midfield to Kobe Lee who immediately tapped a beautiful pass on the ground up to Weinberger. He sprinted towards the right goal post to chase the pass and tapped in the goal to the opposite bottom corner. Zero dribbles, two assists and a second goal in 25 seconds.

They still were not done.

Just past the 15 minute mark of the half, Weinberger struck yet again. Lee, who netted his own hat trick two weeks ago in a game, gained control of the ball in the middle third of the field, about 10 yards past the half line. He volleyed the ball forward to the right side of the field, essentially mirroring the set up from the second goal. Once again, Weinberger chased down his teammates pass, and booted the ball into the goal from virtually the exact same spot. The only difference was that he aimed for the top left corner, rather than the bottom one. It was Weinberger's second goal of the game. He also now ranks ninth fastest in NCAA Division III men's soccer history for one player scoring two goals. He did it in 15 seconds. Chapman took a 3-0 lead heading into half time.

Defensively, goalkeeper Otto Richter helped Chapman secure the massive victory. The sophomore had six saves on the day, including two late in the second half where he stopped a massive shot, and leaped up to grab a loose ball an Occidental player attempted to head in.

With the win, Chapman moves into second place in the SCIAC. The conference is one of the most competitive, with just three points separating the top five seeds. Chapman will continue building momentum as they head on the road to play Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 10.
