ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in an 84-58 victory over Caltech to snap a three-game losing skid. The Panthers' finished with their largest margin of victory this season.
Jake Heberle dropped in a layup just 25 seconds into the game and sparked a 12-2 run over the first five minutes as the Panthers never trailed. Heberle finished with 13 points and Cruz Billings led the way with 15 points in just 21 minutes.
The Panthers dominated inside with 58 points in the paint to Caltech's 38. The Panthers shot 52 percent on the night and knocked down 7-of-20 three-point attempts. A balanced effort saw 11 different players score at least two points. Joe Jack added 11 points off the bench.
After building a 10-point lead over the first five minutes, the Panthers battled Caltech for the next 15 of the first half. The Beavers stopped the run but couldn't cut into the lead as it grew to 16 points by halftime. A couple of three-pointers out of the gate in the second half pushed the lead to 20 and it eventually ballooned to as much as 32 on Jamison Fox's baseline slam.
The Panthers moved back to .500 in SCIAC play with the home victory at 3-3. They will host Cal Lutheran on Monday at 4 p.m. – just two weeks after suffering a 1-point loss in Thousands Oaks.
