Sherfey's career-high leads women's basketball over Whittier

Aidan Sherfey scored a game-high 20 points in the victory.

ORANGE, Calif. – A career night for Aidan Sherfey led the Chapman University women's basketball team to a 66-60 win over Whittier. Sherfey and the Panthers used an 18-5 run to start the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Sherfey came alive in the second half, scoring 11 of her career-high 20 points in the third quarter alone. She also grabbed six rebounds, distributed three assists and blocked two shots in a solid all-around effort.

Sherfey's 11 points in the third kept the Panthers in the game as Whittier chipped away at the Panthers' slim halftime lead. The Poets briefly took a two-point lead in the third before Sherfey scored four straight points to reclaim the lead for Chapman. A layup from Lanakila Nitta tied the game up for Whittier just before the end of the quarter.

The Panthers responded with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes of the fourth, which extended to a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to push the lead into double digits with just two minutes to go. From there, Chapman was able to hold off a late Poet push for the win.

Layla Woods added 14 points and seven rebounds in her return from injury and Maile Nakaji scored 10 points in the win. The Panthers scored 36 points in the point to overcome a 1-for-9 shooting night from three-point range. The Panthers were also 17-of-20 from the free throw line while Whittier was 14-for-23.

Chapman stays home to take on Caltech on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second game of a SCIAC basketball doubleheader.
