ORANGE, Calif.— Chapman Lacrosse fought hard but fell to No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer 17-9 at home. Star freshman attacker
Ella Seidel netted another five goals against one of the best defenses in the country.
After scoring just two goals against the Sagehens nine months ago, Chapman netted three goals in the first quarter, the Panthers held their own.
By halftime, Chapman found themselves in a deeper hole trailing 8-3. But, freshman goalkeeper
Madelyn Kuhnlein, Seidel and company got down to business in the late third and fourth quarters. Seidel netted three consecutive goals while Kuhnlein recorded 13 total saves for the game.
Tade Scheid and
Madi Escobar both scored early in the fourth quarter to bring the Panthers within just a three goal deficit with under 10 minutes to play. Seidel (7) and Scheid (4) also had a combined 11 of Chapman's 13 draw controls.
Despite best efforts, Pomona-Pitzer proved too much to handle. Sydney Landauer recorded 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Fiona Lewis recorded another four goals on seven total shots. The offensive onslot combined with the Sagehens carrying a bigger roster, gave them an advantage late in the fourth quarter. That slim 11-8 lead eventually ballooned up to 17-9 by game's end.
The team will look to regain momentum on Saturday, March 15 as they head on the road to continue SCIAC play against Redlands.
