ORANGE, Calif. – For the second game in a row, the Chapman University women's basketball team fell in overtime. The Panthers dropped their regular season finale 70-62 to visiting CMS. Chapman will be the No. 3 seed in next week's SCIAC Tournament.
Layla Woods led the Panthers with 21 points and four rebounds while Kali Cajala scored 15 points and Shanna Brown added 15 more off the bench.
Chapman had a nine-point lead at halftime but saw that cut down to just two in the third quarter. With just under five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Woods knocked down a jumper to give Chapman a 54-50 lead. However, the Panthers did not score for the remainder of regulation and the first three minutes of overtime.
The eight minute scoring drought led to an 11-0 run for CMS and a 61-54 lead. The Athenas drained 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Panthers will take on Cal Lutheran on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
