ORANGE, Calif. – A strong second half led the Chapman University men's basketball team to a 75-63 win over No. 4 Redlands in the SCIAC-opener for both teams. The Panthers handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the year with 47 points in the second half.
Jake Heberle led the Panthers' upset effort with 22 points and eight rebounds while Joe Keegan added 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Cruz Billings scored 14 points with five assists and the bench combined for 15 points in the second half to lift Chapman.
A 7-0 run to start the second half put the Panthers in control after the teams went into the locker room tied at 28-28 at halftime. Redlands battled back to tie the game at 37-37 but Dylan Mansour, who led the bench players with eight points, drove to the rim for a go-ahead layup on a feed from Keegan. Chapman scored on its next four possessions to get the lead back to seven points.
TJ Tittelfitz and Heberle hit back-to-back threes and Keegan put the lead back to seven with a baseline slam. As Redlands tried to claw its way back in the game, the Panthers always had an answer. As quickly as a lead dwindled down to a single possession, it ballooned back up to seven or eight points.
The lead reached double digits with 5:40 to go and the Panthers as the Panthers broke the Bulldogs' press and controlled the clock with some clutch end-of-shot clock shots from Luke Farrington, Keegan and Heberle.
Heberle and Billings combined to go 8-for-8 at the line in the final minutes to push the lead back into double digits.
Chapman shot 51.9 percent on the night and 61.5 percent in the second half. The Panthers knocked down 7-of-11 three point attempts in the second half to fuel the upset win.
The Panthers are back on the Hutton Sports Center floor on Saturday at 2 p.m. to take on Pomona-Pitzer.
