ORANGE, Calif. – Jake Heberle knocked down a three-pointer 13 seconds into the game as the Chapman University men's basketball team never trailed in an 88-63 win over visiting Emerson. Heberle led the way with 21 points as the Panthers bounced back from Thursday's loss with a commanding victory.
After Heberle's three to open the game, Chapman opened up a 7-0 lead over the first three minutes. The lead grew to 19 before halftime and to as much as 30 in the second half as Chapman remained in control throughout.
The Panthers' hard-fought victory came with a solid shooting night as Chapman made 48.3 percent of their shots and went 14-of-30 behind the three-point line. The Panthers also drained 18-of-21 free throws. Heberle was 7-for-10 in the game and was 4-of-6 from three-point range. Cruz Billings dished out seven assists and scored nine points.
Joe Keegan added 13 points and TJ Tittelfitz scored 14 off the bench.
The Panthers came out strong on the defensive end as well, limiting Emerson to less than 40 percent shooting. The points spread around for the Lions as no player ended the game in double figures. Chapman forced 18 turnovers and turned those 18 turnovers into 30 points.
Chapman enters a holiday break in the schedule and returns to the Hutton Center on Dec. 29 to take on Hardin-Simmons at 2 p.m.
